Small balances and bitcoin casinos: minimum withdrawals I wish I had checked

I play small. A typical deposit for me is somewhere around fifty dollars worth of bitcoin, and a good night might double it. For a long time I never looked at minimum withdrawal amounts, because I assumed they were set low enough not to matter. Then I ended a session with a balance just under a site's minimum and realised the only way to get it out was to keep playing until it was either above the limit or gone. It was gone within twenty minutes.

Since then I check three numbers in the cashier before I make a first deposit.

The minimum withdrawal in BTC. At most of the sites I have used it sits somewhere between the equivalent of ten and thirty dollars, but I have seen higher. Some sites set it in BTC and never update it, so when the price rises, the dollar value of the minimum rises with it.

The withdrawal fee. A flat fee of a few thousand satoshis is fine on a large cashout and painful on a small one. I work out what percentage of a typical win the fee would take. If it is more than about five percent of what I usually withdraw, the site is a poor fit for how I play.

Whether the fee is fixed or follows network conditions. Sites that adjust their fee to current mempool rates are usually cheaper on quiet days and more expensive during busy ones. A fixed fee is predictable, which I sometimes prefer.

There are also a couple of details that only show up when you actually try.

Some casinos have a lower minimum for Lightning withdrawals than for on-chain ones. If you already use a Lightning wallet, that can make small cashouts realistic.

Some count bonus funds against the minimum differently. A balance that looks withdrawable might include an amount that is still locked by wagering, and the cashier will only tell you once you press the button.

A few sites let you withdraw below the minimum if you close the account. I would not plan around this, but it is worth asking support about.

My routine now is to deposit, play, and stop once I am clearly above the minimum plus the fee. That sounds obvious, yet I ignored it for a long time because I never knew the numbers.

When I am comparing new bitcoin sites, I start with the list on CCR and then open each cashier myself to note the minimum and the fee before signing up. The reviews give me the shortlist and the cashier gives me the exact figures, which I write down in a simple spreadsheet.

If you play with small amounts like I do, these two numbers matter more than the size of any welcome bonus. A generous bonus is useless if your winnings are stuck below the line.
